Venissa Nelson

Contentnea and Savannah Alumnus, Probation/Parole Officer

After graduating from Contentnea, I went on to Savannah from grades 6-8 where I was a cheerleader. After leaving Savannah I went to North Lenoir High School were I was very active in various organizations. I was a cheerleader on both the Junior Varsity and Varsity squads. I participated in the Miss Jabberwock and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Cotillion. After graduating from high school, I attended North Carolina Central University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Juvenile Justice. I was also very active in college participating on the Junior Varsity cheerleading squad also known as Silhouette. I was involved in the Student Activities Board, 100 Black Women, the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society, and I am a proud member of the Order of Eastern Star.
venissa_nelsonWhen I find that things are getting difficult I pray and ask for guidance. There have been many days that I just felt like giving up but I have many people who look up to me, so through them and prayer I find strength to keep moving forward.

I have such an amazing support system including family, friends, teachers, professors, and my daughter. Many of these relationships date back to my time at Contentnea. I have always been a goal-driven individual. Once I put my mind to something, I become focused on it until that goal is completed. I have always believed that my future was greater than my past and I still believe that today. Going to Savannah every morning during the announcements, our principal Mrs. Nobles would come on and her last comment was always “make it a great day or not, the choice is yours.” Because of that statement I have always known that the choices I make for myself could effect me whether it be now or later. I have a child that now looks up to me and through me she will know that the sky is the limit.

I currently reside in Durham, North Carolina where I work for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety as a Probation/Parole Officer in Orange County. I am a Natural Hair Care stylist part-time and also am working to launch a boutique event planning business. I am still a student as well and am currently back at North Carolina Central University working to receive my Master of Science in Criminal Justice.
